MREA partners with Focus on Energy–APTIM to deliver hybrid solar education to students statewide.
This past spring, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) partnered with Focus on Energy–APTIM to deliver a tailored solar training program for 14 students across Wisconsin. Designed to provide both flexibility and practical experience, the custom course included 32 hours of online learning and an eight-hour in-person lab component. This blended training format prepared each participant to take the NABCEP PV Associate exam and earn their credential—setting them up for careers in the growing solar energy industry.
The curriculum was made up of four core MREA courses: Basic Photovoltaics (PV 101), PV Site Assessment (PV 201), PV System Design (PV 202), and PV Labs and Design Scenarios (PV 304). Participants gained a solid foundation in solar electric systems, from understanding system components and site analysis to performing accurate system sizing and layout planning. The final lab course gave students the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice, constructing PV systems using portable lab equipment assembled at ground level—no climbing required.

To make participation accessible, the MREA hosted the hands-on labs at four regional locations: Waukesha, Eau Claire, Green Bay, and Madison. The online portion ran from January through March, with in-person sessions held throughout May at locations across the state. The training experience equipped learners with the technical knowledge, real-world context, and confidence needed to pursue solar careers or deepen their current skillsets.

“My training with MREA was incredibly informative and well-structured. The instructors were knowledgeable, approachable, and brought a lot of real-world experience to the table. The course content was comprehensive, covering everything from system design and installation to safety and code requirements.”
“What I appreciated most was how hands-on the training was—it really helped solidify the concepts and gave me the confidence to apply what I learned in the field. I’d highly recommend MREA to anyone looking to get started in solar or advance their knowledge in the renewable energy space.”– Ashley Baillargeon, MREA student
