Solar on Schools

Since its launch in 2019, the Solar on Schools program has awarded dozens of public Wisconsin K-12 schools and colleges with in-kind module grants valued up to $20,000.

The Couillard Solar Foundation, in partnership with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), created Solar on Schools to assist with and simplify the solar project development process. With the dissolution of the foundation taking place over the next few years, the Solar on Schools program will transition to RENEW Wisconsin with all current grantees receiving the awards they have been presented.

The Solar on Schools program aimed to reinvest savings into brighter futures for Wisconsin K-12 students. To date, the program has installed 9.4 MW of solar on 59 Wisconsin schools with grant recipients ranging from elementary schools to technical colleges.

In addition to funding PV installations, Solar on Schools provided valuable resources for students, school staff, and community groups to encourage solar advocacy and involvement. By educating school communities on the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy, Solar on Schools fostered greater awareness of the positive impact solar installations can have for Wisconsin public school districts.

Getting Started

Getting Solar at Your School: FAQs

Schools going solar for the first time can feel overwhelmed and underinformed about the technology and process. We’ve compiled a list of FAQs to help explain the basics of solar, solar project costs, resources available, and project consideration to help your Solar Planning Team get started. For more advanced project development resources and templates, explore the “For Solar Planning Teams” tab.

The Benefits of Solar on Schools

This webinar introduces Solar on Schools and current solar school trends. Sara Windjue, Outreach Coordinator for the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program, discusses renewable energy educational and curriculum opportunities. You’ll hear from Oregon School District science teacher Nathan Mahr, who has been utilizing solar PV in school curriculum for years as well as Merton School District superintendent Ronald Russ, who discusses the district’s 389kW system commissioned December 2019.
