The Solar Corps

A Workforce Development Partnership

Connecting technical and community colleges with solar contractors to establish solar career pathways for students.

The Solar Corps is a workforce development project that helps connect aspiring solar professionals with real work experience and opportunity. Solar installer is one of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. And when it comes to jobs in solar, the Midwestern U.S. is in the running for the fastest growing region.

As the need for qualified solar professionals grows, The Solar Corps works with colleges to connect students and recent graduates with real-work experience with solar contractors, and provides those contractors the opportunity to connect with qualified employees.

Partnering With Schools

Across the Midwest, 2-year colleges are offering a variety of technical training programs to prepare students for work in the growing solar energy industry.  The Solar Corps is a regional workforce partnership designed to assist colleges with two common needs:

  1. Providing hands-on and work-site experience for students, and
  2. Supporting student job placement and professional certification to advance in the solar industry

Intern Testimonial

“Overall I had, and continue to have, a great experience as a result of the internship with The Solar Corps, so I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Midwest Renewable Energy Association for roles you played in helping make my internship both possible and successful.”

Making Training Inclusive And Accessible

Solar energy jobs increased 9% nationwide from 2020 to 2021, creating meaningful work for hundreds of thousands of people. As the industry continues to grow, so does the need to ensure its opportunities are accessible to underrepresented groups, including women, the formerly incarcerated, and individuals who are Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC).

At the MREA, we’re rolling up our sleeves and partnering with organizations dedicated to environmental and climate justice to provide full-ride scholarships to aspiring solar professionals in underrepresented communities across the Midwest—but we need your help to make it happen.
