Focus on Energy Publishes New Trade Ally Research with MREA Support

September 24, 2025 Featured Post, Grants, News

FOCUS ON ENERGYⓇ recently completed the Trade Ally Technical Assistance Research project. This research builds on the 2024 Empowering Trade Allies for Building Efficiency and Electrification research project and offers detailed strategies to strengthen contractor training, technical support, and recruitment across Wisconsin.

Research and Grants Manager Kenzie Luterbach and Executive Director Nick Hylla supported the study, engaging with training providers and Focus on Energy Trade Allies — including HVAC contractors, insulation and weatherization specialists, home performance contractors, and builders — to identify the training, resources, and financial support needed to expand Wisconsin’s energy efficiency workforce.

“Wisconsin contractors are eager to grow their businesses and serve more customers, but they need practical training opportunities, access to equipment, and direct technical support to do it effectively. These recommendations are about removing barriers so Trade Allies can upskill their workforce, keep pace with new technologies, and deliver the high-quality services Wisconsin homeowners need.”

– Kenzie Luterbach, MREA Research and Grants Manager

The report outlines recommendations across three areas: training, financial support, and technical assistance. Key strategies include expanding regional, hands-on training opportunities; developing specialized courses in advanced HVAC and building performance; and improving technical assistance with clearer communication and real-time contractor support.

“Wisconsin is at a pivotal moment for scaling energy efficiency and electrification. This research shows how targeted workforce development efforts can remove barriers for contractors, expand their capacity, and ensure that every household can benefit from these once-in-a-generation investments.”

– Nick Hylla, MREA Executive Director

With the Home Efficiency Rebates (HOMES) and Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) — two programs funded through the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) — now active in Wisconsin for over a year, demand for energy efficiency and electrification services continues to grow. This report provides a roadmap for ensuring that Trade Allies have the skilled workforce, resources, and support needed to keep pace with program uptake and deliver lasting benefits to households statewide.
