DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Tuesday\, March 31 starting at 5:30 p.m. \nWHERE: Online via Zoom \nThe MREA’s March webinar will feature Susan Schuller\, Executive Director of Recycling Connections\, for an engaging deep dive into backyard composting — from the fundamentals to practical tips you can put to use right away. \nLearn how to turn everyday food scraps into nutrient-rich “black gold” compost while reducing waste and lowering your climate impact. Whether you’re brand new to composting or looking to refine your system\, this workshop will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to build healthier soil and make the most of what would otherwise go to waste. \nSusan Schuller is the Executive Director for Recycling Connections providing professional development services and consultations in zero waste\, recycling\, organics diversion\, and waste reduction. She is an avid backyard composter with over 20 years of experience. She holds a MS in Natural Resources\, BS in Biology/Chemistry\, and two decades of teaching environmental education and sustainability topics. SUMMARY:MREA Webinar Series — Spring Cleaning Sustainably
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Tuesday\, February 24 starting at 5:30 p.m. \nWHERE: Online via Zoom \nThis month’s webinar welcomes Rubina Martini\, owner of PROCESS and co-owner of Tomorrow River Homestead\, for a discussion on seasonal sustainability\, exploring eco-friendly ways to refresh living spaces and build sustainable habits. \nSustainability is a journey and aligning to the seasons is one way to ensure it becomes an overall lifestyle. Spring time is a season of renewal. Together we will discuss sustainable options to reset\, reflect and re-envision what this seasonal refresh can be. \nIn the workshop we will focus on attuning with the season\, refreshing living spaces using non-toxic\, eco-friendly methods that reduce waste and environmental impact. Topics include simplified natural cleaners\, adopting reusable cleaning tools\, donating/upcycling items\, and building sustainable habits. \nRubina incorporates her own cultural connections of seasons and a love for nature throughout the discussion. As a parent\, entrepreneur\, and conscientious consumer\, they will weave ideas of sustainability with practical lifestyle tools. Participants should come with questions and curiosity. With plenty to discuss\, having the means to take notes is encouraged. \nRubina is the owner of PROCESS and co-owns Tomorrow River Homestead. She is a citizen of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska doing cultural work throughout her tribal community. Rue is President of the Village of Nelsonville and is one of the founding members of the Nelsonville Water Committee. Accolades over the last couple years include the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin (AROW) Outstanding Achievement in Waste Reduction & Recycling\, two national Backing Small Businesses Enhancement Grants as well as a Wisconsin Humanities Opportunity Grant. DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Tuesday\, January 27 starting at 5:30 p.m. \nWHERE: Online via Zoom \nThis month’s webinar features Nick Hylla\, Executive Director of the Midwest Renewable Energy Association\, for a practical\, plain-language overview of how the electricity system works and the current and expected impact of large scale solar energy\, energy storage\, data centers\, small modular reactors and more. Nick will walk through the basics of how the grid works\, the different types of electricity production\, and key considerations for homeowners and businesses exploring solar. He’ll also touch on utility-scale solar and share resources to help you communities navigate local solar development concerns. The session will conclude with a live Q&A\, giving participants the opportunity to submit questions and learn directly from one of the Midwest’s most experienced clean energy educators. \nNick Hylla is the Executive Director of the Midwest Renewable Energy Association where he works in partnership with organizations throughout the Midwest to advance solar energy education and market development initiatives. Nick holds an MS degree in natural resource management\, has 15 years of experience in non-profit leadership\, and has served as the Principal Investigator on 6 US Dept. of Energy assistance agreements to support solar workforce development and help reduce the “soft costs” of solar energy development in Midwest states. \nCan’t make it to the live webinar?
